2 Sincerity
The Noble Qur'aan is Kalaamullaah (the word of Allaah), which He sent down upon His Messenger sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam. It is written on paper, transmitted mutawaatir (generation after generation by word of mouth), and recited as an act of ibaadah (worship). It is the greatest blessing Allaah has granted us.
If we ignore its commandments it is as if we are dead. Without the Qur'aan we have no life.
Memorization is facilitated to those who memorize with ease, by Allaah subhaanahu wa ta'aala. But you may endure some hardships during that journey. But good follows the hardship.
The one who memorizes is elevated to the highest rank of jannah. When you think of this reward, you forget about all the hardships.
This is your important life investment. So take the decision and purify your intention for the sake of Allaah and memorize the Qur'aan.
In this episode we meet Shaykh Ahmad who memorized Qur'aan and he has autism.
Sincerity. Purify your intentions for the sake of Allaah. Make all your worship purely for the sake of Allaah. Keep yourself away from all the contamination of the dunya and make your effort sincerely for the sake of Allaah.
If you intend to memorize for the sake of Allaah, doors will open for you. Any obstacle standing in the way of your hifdh, Allaah will remove it. He elevates you among people, provides for you, pushes harm away from you.
We know the famous hadith which means, the ahlul Qur'aan are the ahl of Allaah! (ahl = family)
We want to protect our families, give them, defend them. Now if you are the family of Allaah, how will He protect you, defend you, provide for you? How high will He place you in jannah? How much will He raise your ranks in duniya and aakhirah? Reflect on this reward in order to memorize, encourage and increase our efforts to memorize the Qur'aan.

3 The Arabic Language
One day the Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam went to Ubayy bin Ka'ab (Abu al Mundhir) radhiAllaahu anhu and said, Allaah has ordered me to recite Qur'aan to you. He was surprised and asked, did Allaah mention my name to you? The Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi sallam confirmed that He did. Ubayy was overwhelmed which caused tears to fall down his cheeks.
We need to understand the great status of your name being mentioned by Allaah subhaanahu wa ta'aala in order to understand, become more motivated and to increase in our memorization of the Qur'aan.
There are people in the world who have perfectly memorized the Qur'aan even though they do not understand a word of it. So encourage your children and your families, and memorize Qur'aan.

5 Don't Despair
Once you decide to memorize Qur'aan, and once you start, never despair. During this journey, you will face many obstacles and hardships. To the point where you will think, that's it, I cannot continue any more.
Sometimes a person will memorize 1 juz or 2 or 3, then they miss a day, and then they say, that's it, I cannot continue. This is from Shaytan. Honey does not come without tasting the bee stings.
The Qur'aan is Magnificent! There are people with special needs and disabilities who endure so much difficulty to memorize - they endure hardships we would not even face.
If you resist your desires, Allaah will facilitate a way through all the hardships for you. He will, because you did so for His sake.
When we see people with special needs achieve so much we realize honestly how much we are falling short in our duty to Allaah. We must learn Qur'aan. We will not find barakah except in the Qur'aan.

6 Why Memorize
Knowing the answer to the question 'why' is very important when it comes to memorizing the Qur'aan. You need well-defined intentions. Make them clear and well-defined. For example:
These are all good, beautiful and wonderful intentions. They are important to keep you progressing in your journey.
During this journey, at some point you may feel lazy or bored of the memorization routine. Setting your intentions will renew your commitment and enable you to resume your memorization with higher energy.
The Qur'aan is Shifa. Therefore, we recite Qur'aan as Ruqyah. What about one who has memorized Qur'aan? How Allaah will protect you from sickness and evil!

- I want to become close to the Qur'aan and have it with me wherever I go, at home, at the masjid, in the car, at work, and indeed everywhere, so that I may listen, revise and remember it all the time. This is a beautiful goal and a good intention to have.
- To be Ahl ul Qur'aan [There is a hadeeth that the Ahl ul Qur'aan are the Ahl of Allaah subhaanahu wa tal'aala.]
- To teach Qur'aan [The best of you are those who learn Qur'aan and teach it - Hadith]
- To honour his parents on the Day of Judgment
These are all good, beautiful and wonderful intentions. They are important to keep you progressing in your journey.

7 More Time & Effort
When memorizing the Qur'aan, you should dedicate your time and effort for this goal. Never say, I don't have time. Never make your memorization secondary. Qur'aan is high in status, don't just give it your spare time.
A person may say they are too busy with whatever their activities are. But when they fall ill, they will find an hour to exercise to preserve their health, because that is a priority.
If you love Qur'aan, you want to memorize it, you know what reward Allaah has prepared for it... give it time! Qur'aan is Azeez, give it priority and time.
When you memorize, use a single mushaf. There are many prints of the mushafs. Don't switch from one to another. The memorizer looks at the Qur'aan and memorizes the location of the verses.
Shaykh Fahad al Kandari recommends the Mushaf al Madinah printed by the King Fahad complex because the script is clear. It comes in geen and blue print. Each page begins with and ayah and ends with an ayah. 2 pages makes one juz.

People wonder how long it takes to memorize the Qur'aan. The Qur'aan has 30 juz. Each juz has approximately 20 pages.
If you want to memorize in a year, memorize 2 pages a day. This includes 10 months for memorization and 2 months for reviewing.
If you want to memorize in 3 years, memorize a page a day. You will have 2.5 years for memorization and 5-6 months for revision.
Those who are very busy and committed to their work or social life can memorize the Qur'aan in 5 years. Memorize a ruba' (quarter of a hizb or 2- 2.5 pages) a week. This is less than half a page a day.
You may be surprised that it is so easy. It is that easy. And this is an approximate calculation. Pick your plan.

Which Muslim does not want to be a hafidh ul Qur'aan?
There is a hadith that there is no envy except in 2 situations, and one is the person who memorized the Qur'aan and is in Qiyaam day and night (and one who has been given money and he spends it in the path of Allaah day and night).
The hafidh memorizes and prays Qiyaam. And during the day, he adopts the manners taught by the Qur'aan by implementing it. It also means he spreads it by teaching its knowledge.

24 Listen More
If you are memorizing a page or half a page today, listen to that portion recited by your favourite recitor. You can listen on your iPod, in the car, at home. Repeat that a few times, and inshaAllaah your memorization will be strengthened. Listen to the Qur'aan from recitors who are proficient in recitation and it will help you solidify your memorization.
There are many hidden gems that aid in the memorization of the Qur'aan but many of us neglect them. One such gem is competition - compete with your peers. Choose a friend and challenge each other in memorization.
Another gem, if you have memorized a lot of Qur'aan is fast recitation (hadr). It is important. It will boost your confidence. It will help you revise more.

Anas ibn Malik narrated in a very serious statement, There would be a reciter of the Qur'aan whom the Qur'aan curses.
This is an advice to myself first and to all who wish to memorize the Qur'aan.
Why would the Qur'aan curse once who is reciting it? Because this person recites the Qur'aan all the time, memorizes it, but never follows its advice or acts according to it. For example, he memorizes the verses about riba, but continues to take riba. He memorizes them, preaches to others but does not implement them. He reads about backbiting, he memorizes the verses, and then goes and consumes people' flesh, spreads rumours about them, accuses them and talks about anyone. He memorizes verses about kindness to parents but treats his parents worse than anyone else. This is a very dangerous state.
It is a fundamental requirement when you memorize the Qur'aan, you need to immediately implement and put it into action. The sahabah would not memorize more than 10 verses at a time. They would implement them to please Allaah. Then they would memorize the next 10 verses and apply them.
This means, the point is not how much you memorized, or when you memorized, or how much is left. The point is, how much do you apply to your life? This is very important and an advice from the heart to the heart.
And follow the best of what was revealed to you from your Lord before the punishment comes upon you suddenly while you do not perceive [Zumar 39: 55]
Memorizing is beautiful when you reflect and apply.
وَهَٰذَا كِتَابٌ أَنزَلْنَاهُ مُبَارَكٌ فَاتَّبِعُوهُ وَاتَّقُوا لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ
And this [Qur'an] is a Book We have revealed [which is] blessed, so follow it and fear Allah that you may receive mercy. [Al An'aam 6:155]
Ammar ibn Yasir participated in the battle of Yamamah, a battle in which many huffadh were martyred. So he used to tell the ones who participated in the battle, Oh people of the Qur'aan, beautify the Qur'aan with your actions.
Let us do the same and beautify our lives by applying all the commandments that are in this miraculous book.
Read the biographies of the righteous companions, may Allaah be pleased with them. Their tales are beautiful and their stories, touching and will impact your heart when memorizing the Qur'aan. When you read how Abu Bakr memorized the Qur'aan and prayed with it at night; when you read how Umar used to put it in action; when you read how Uthman would say, if your hearts are pure you would never feel you had enough of Qur'aan. Uthman ibn Affan used to recite the entire Qur'aan in his night prayer. If you read about these people, won't you be inspired? Abdullaah ibn Mas'ud, the prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam asked him to recite the Qur'aan to him. Ubayy ibn Kaab, master of recitors, read about his amazing life. Abdullaah ibn Abbas, the interpreter of the Qur'aan. The point is exposure to the lives of these people will motivate you to memorize, reflect and implement.
Do you know, oh one who memorizes Qur'aan, that the Qur'aan defends you? Now you live in its company, memorize it, revise it, reflect upon it, act upon it. It is your life. And it will never forsake you on the Day of Judgment.
Imagine that day, when sun comes close to the people. Everyone will be in need of some help, some intercessor to save them. But the condition of the haafidh is different on that day. Because he know he has a friend who will take him by the hand to jannah.
The prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam said recite the Qur'aan for it intercedes for its people on the day of judgment.

27 Age
It is more difficult to memorize when older, but remember Allaah has made the Qur'aan easy.
Qur'aan is given to whoever loves it.
Try and memorize even a verse a day. You will get the reward of memorizing even if you don't manage to memorize it properly, because you made a beautiful and sincere intention.
Qur'aan is Azeez. If you don't seek it, it never comes to you. If you abandon it, it abandons you.
Here is a tip to memorize with itqaan. Lets say you memorize a page a day. Once you memorize it, recite it again and again while looking into the mushaf. Do this at least 15 times without looking away. This will etch the image of the page in your mind. This will help you place it in long term memory.

O haafidh of Qur'aan, remember that in your heart are the words of Allaah. This is what makes the Qur'aan miraculous. No matter how much the haters of the Qur'aan try, they cannot erase it from your heart.
In Turkey, 50 years ago no one was allowed to memorize the Qur'aan - in fact they punished those who tried to learn it. They learnt it in dark rooms and taught their families and spread the knowledge.

29 Pray With It
The Book of Allaah is a great miracle as is its memorization in the hearts of people. When you find millions of people all over the world, of different ages and races memorizing Qur'aan, its 600 pages, mutashaabihaat, its tashkeel, it is indeed a miracle. It is impossible to find any other book on earth memorized in this way. That is why Allaah challenged all of mankind with the Qur'aan. One of the miracles is that even children aged 10 or 6 or 5 memorize the Qur'aan. You will find an illiterate person who cannot read or write memorize it. They hear it and memorize. You find blind people who cannot read memorize by hearing it. How amazing is that? You find people with mental disabilities memorizing Qur'aan. People who don't understand or speak Arabic memorize the Qur'aan in Arabic with itqaan. The Book of Allaah is a divine miracle and its verses are divine signs.
إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ
Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian.
The Qur'aan is preserved in writing but also in the hearts of Muslims.
An important tip a you memorize Qur'aan is to recite it in all of your prayers. Not necessarily in your 5 fardh prayers only, you may be memorizing and never get to lead those prayers, so it is not in your control what to read. Pray the voluntary prayers with what you memorized. For example, at Fajr recite what you memorized in the sunnah prayers before Fajr. Likewise for the rest of the prayers.
If you wish to delay these voluntary prayers (in which you recite what you memorize) until the night, you will enjoy that, for Qiyaam ul Layl, for the hafidh ul Qur'aan, is something that should never stop. Never leave the night prayer. The hafidh is known by his nights, when people are asleep. If you cannot make it late, then redte after Isha. You will find tremendous joy in praying with these verses. You will also see how firm it gets in your memory. This was the condition of the righteous generations.
